01 / Behind the words

A life tested. A voice that kept going.

Start with Book I, the original beginning. Book II takes the story further—into politics, institutions, and the choices that followed. His account. Your judgment.

01

The boy before the headlines.

Fresno. Madera. Family, fear, belonging—and the childhood memories that stay long after the world starts telling a different story.

02

The work behind the words.

Training people. Taking responsibility. Learning that leadership is what happens when other people are counting on you.

03

The questions power must answer.

What does it take to be heard? Who answers when an institution makes a decision? Book II takes these questions further, into Rene's interest in public service and the future he wants to help build.

Before you judge the man, know the story.

Then decide for yourself.

Where the story begins.

My first serious argument with power was with a horse.

I was born in Fresno, and my family moved to the Madera area, where we lived around fields, open space, and horses we called wild. I was probably six or seven. I was old enough to hear a warning and young enough to believe the warning was meant for somebody else.

My family told me not to approach the horses.

What was going through my head?

I do not know. I was six or seven.
